2016 Stradbroke Handicap Field and Barrier Draw

June 8th, 2016

A talent-rich and capacity field of eighteen sprinters have been confirmed in the 2016 Stradbroke Handicap field; highlighted by the inclusion of several previous winners at the highest level and some of the Brisbane Winter Carnival’s standout performers.

Azkadellia has remained favourite to win the Winter Carnival feature race since her outstanding autumn preparation, and the Ciaron Maher-trained mare will prove very tough to beat after drawing into the 2016 Stradbroke Handicap field in barrier 5.

Capping a strong 2015 campaign third in the Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m), Azkedellia returned to racing this year for second in the Group 2 Bellmaine Stakes (1200m) before savaging the line for success in the Group 3 Mannerism Stakes (1400m) a fortnight later.

Running on for a close second in the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) on March 12th, the Shinko King mare was brave when third in the Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) in heavy going, and was rewarded for her form a week later when posting a maiden Group 1 triumph in the Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m).

Having returned from a freshen-up for second in the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1350m) a fortnight ago, Azkadellia will be partnered by Damien Oliver in the Stradbroke Handicap.

Black Heart Bart massacred an impressive field when triumphant in the Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m) in May, and the five-year-old has been confirmed in the 2016 Stradbroke Handicap field.

A former Perth galloper, Black Heart Bart has undoubtedly found career-best form since arriving in the care of Darren Weir at the beginning of autumn.

Rated little chance of success in the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) first-up, the Blackfriars gelding stormed home to finish a close second to The Quarterback.

Returning to winning form in the Group 3 Victoria Handicap (1400m) on March 26th, Black Heart Bart ran a close second in the Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m) on April 16th in what was his only start prior to The Goodwood.

Brad Rawiller has been confirmed to retain the ride on Black Heart Bart, and will leave from barrier 10 in the Stradbroke Handicap.

The Chris Waller-trained Delectation was unlucky to finish outside the places in the Doomben 10,000 last time, but could very well receive the run of the race in the Stradbroke Handicap from barrier 7, particularly with James McDonald aboard.

Beating a field of the world’s best sprinters in the Group 1 Darley Classic (1200m) at the conclusion of an impressive 2015 campaign, Delectation required a few runs to find form upon resuming this time but clearly relished a return to Brisbane racing last start.

Country horse Artlee has drawn on the rails into the 2016 Stradbroke Handicap field while last start Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) winner Precious Gem has been charged with overcoming the outside barrier 18.
