2015 Stradbroke Handicap to Figure for Black Heart Bart

May 19th, 2015

Black Heart Bart proved her was up to the class of Group 1 racing when fourth in The Goodwood (1200m) at Morphettville on Saturday, and has been confirmed by trainer Vaughn Sigley to travel to Brisbane for the 2015 Stradbroke Handicap (1350m) on June 6th.

Black Heart Bart jumped from the gates only fairly in The Goodwood and was forced to settle off the early pace of Tudor and Lord Of The Sky, just three positions off the tail of the field.

Receiving a good run in transit, the son of Blackfriars was clearly out of winning contention rounding onto the final straight but mustered a huge turn of foot to finish within two lengths of winner Flamberge.

Thrilled with his performance to overcome a luckless start, Sigley told The West Australian Black Heart Bart has come out of The Goodwood in great condition and has more than earned his position in the 2015 Stradbroke Handicap final field.

“That run proves he’s well and truly up to them,” Sigley said.

“He wasn’t going to be able to win from there, but it was just the way it panned out.

“The horse next to him, Smokin’ Joey, lunged at the barriers a few times before the start and he didn’t time the jump very well.

“He was quite relaxed on Saturday, which probably isn’t quite like him.

“It was a big run. He pulled up good and we’re going to go to Queensland now.”

Posting seven wins and as many minors over an impressive 19 start career so far, Black Heart Bart stamped his claims as one to watch from his maiden racing preparation in late 2013 and early 2014; highlighted by a close second in the Listed Challenge Stakes (1500m) in February.

Unlucky to miss his major summer target over the 2014 Perth Summer Carnival, the Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) with a minor ailment, the West Australian native responded well in taking out his next two starts with ease, including the Listed WA Stakes (1400m).

Arguably finding career-best form to date in his 2015 preparation leading up to The Goodwood, the gelding out of Sister Theresa won each of the Listed Summer Scorcher (1000m), Listed Cyril Flower Stakes (1200m), Listed Pinjarra Classic (1300m) and Listed Bunburry Stakes.
