2015 Stradbroke Handicap Unlikely for Flamberge

May 18th, 2015

Talented gelding Flamberge broke through for a maiden Group 1 victory in The Goodwood (1200m) at Morphettville over the weekend, but trainer Peter Moody is yet to decide if he will progress to the 2015 Stradbroke Handicap (1350m) at Doomben in three weeks.

Flamberge was rated little chance for success in The Goodwood when being confirmed alongside the likes of Hucklebuck, Lucky Hussler and Black Heart Bart, but settled in a good position early before displaying a keen turn of foot to post the huge boil-over.

Understandably thrilled with the performance produced by the son of Exceed And Excel, Moody conceded the five-year-old is best fresh, with ample time between runs and is not sure he will relish a step-up to 1350m for the 2015 Stradbroke Handicap.

“I’ll discuss it with David Moodie (owner), but this bloke is best when fresh and I’m not sure travelling to Brisbane and running twice in three weeks, especially with a step up to 1350m is ideal,” Moody told the Herald Sun.

“If we go to the Stradbroke, he will be his honest self because I always thought he would run seven furlongs. If not, he’ll head to the paddock and be ready for the Spring Carnival.

“He has always been a little bloke but now he is a Group 1 winner with $1 million next to his name.

“I have underrated him as much as anyone but we figured out the key to him was running fresh.

“He ran Chautauqua to a short neck first-up in the Rubiton Stakes and then ran a bottler in the Oakleigh Plate three weeks later.

“I think he would have won the Oakleigh Plate had he been first-up. That’s how much difference being fresh makes him.

“Now he has won the Goodwood first-up after an eight-week break and he fully deserved his win.”

Posting eight wins and as many minors through his 27 career starts so far, Flamberge progressed to a credible third in the Listed Bob Hoysted Handicap (1000m) following his first-up run in the Group 2 Rubiton Stakes, in what was his only other start prior to the Oakleigh Plate this time.

Ladbrokes.com.au is currently offering the best 2015 Stradbroke Handicap odds, for which Flamberge can be taken at a particularly generous quote of $21 for success.
