2015 Stradbroke Handicap May Be Out of Reach of Lumosty

May 13th, 2015

Robert Smerdon has revealed that in an ideal world, classy three-year-old Lumosty will contest the 2015 Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1600m) on June 6th, however the Caulfield-based trained has all but conceded she is probably too far down the order of entry to gain a start.

Lumosty has finished outside the first three only two times through her eight career starts and has seemingly returned to racing in exceptional form this time having comfortably done away with a notable field by more than three lengths in the All Victoria Sprint Series Heat (1100m) first-up on May 9th.

Confirming her target is likely to remain the Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) a fortnight after the 2015 Stradbroke Handicap, Smerdon told Racing Ahead he is confident the Fastnet Rock filly is up to the standard and will likely contest the Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes (1350m) in place.

“There’s either the Dane Ripper, over 1350 for fillies and mares, or the Stradbroke, but she’s way down the order in terms of getting into the Stradbroke so that choice might be taken out of our hands,” Smerdon said.

“So we might go from Flemington to the Dane Ripper and then the Tatt’s Tiara.”

Debut for a commendable second to Eloping in the Listed Blue Diamond Preview (1000m) in early 2014, Lumosty progressed to third in the Group 3 Blue Diamond Prelude (1100m) before returning to the paddock.

Returning in spring for second in the Listed Cap D’Antibes Stakes (1100m), the filly out of Luminous Eyes broke through for a maiden win in the best way possible when taking out the Oxford Landing Estates Maiden (1423m) by more than nine lengths on October 1st.

While failing to making an impact in the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m), Lumosty responded in the best way possible in taking out the Group 2 Moonee Valley Fillies Classic (1600m) on Cox Plate Day and was sent to the paddock following a credible sixth in the Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m).

Lumosty remains a chance of making the 2015 Stradbroke Handicap field and is currently rated a generous $11 chance for success with leading online bookie Ladbrokes.com.au.
