A standout performer over just three competitive race starts so far, South Australian-based trainer Lloyd Kennewell has underlined the 2015 featured Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) as likely to figure as the major winter target for three-year-old Get The Nod.
Stamping his claims as one to watch over his first two race starts, Get The Nod was unlucky to be blocked for a run and squeezed out on the famous Flemington straight during the running of the Group 2 Danehill Stakes (1200m) last time out and finished a disappointing twelfth.
Holding the US Ranger gelding in particularly high regard, Kennewell opted to cut the three-year-old’s spring preparation short with a long view towards success at the highest level of Australian racing in 2015.
Underling The Goodwood (1200m) at his local Morphettville track as likely-to-be his maiden Group 1 appearance, Kennewell said he has been thrilled with the way Get The Nod has reacted to his time in the paddock and is expecting a far-more mature and competitive horse come his return to the track in 2015.
“He is in the paddock still,” Kennewell told Racing Ahead.
“He will be back in the next few weeks and he has had a really good break actually.
“He just had a few niggles and after Flemington we aborted the rest of the campaign after he got beaten because he is too good to mess around with.
“He will get ready for the Adelaide Carnival and then progress to Brisbane I would think.
“Obviously the Brisbane winter with a few soft tracks will really suit him.
“I would be hoping that he could be a Goodwood type horse in Adelaide and I would like to think that he could be a Stradbroke type horse as a three-year-old on the minimum weight next year.
“That is the goals that he will be set and he just has to measure up along the way.”
Comfortably winning the Holdfast Insurance Handicap (1000m) on debut on March 8th before immediately returning to the paddock, Get The Nod claimed success in his maiden black type appearance when taking out the Group 3 Vain Stakes (1100) first-up this season on August 16th.
