A final field of 18 plus five emergencies has been confirmed for this weekend’s featured Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) at Brisbane’s Eagle Farm Racecourse, highlighted by several previous winners at the highest level of Australian racing.
As expected, trainer Tony Gollan will lead the charge of the locals in the 2014 Stradbroke Handicap, accepting positions in the final field for the Boom Brothers.
Returning to the track in career-best form this season, Spirit Of Boom will shoulder a race-high 58kgs in this weekend’s feature race, but remains an excellent chance of success.
Finishing second to the world’s leading sprinter Lankan Rupee in both the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) and Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) first-up this year, the Sequalo entire broke through for a maiden Group 1 victory when just beating Fontelina to the line in the William Reid Stakes (1200m) on March 21st.
Returning to Brisbane in similarly impressive form, Spirit Of Boom finished second in the Group 2 Victory Stakes (1200m) and Group 1 BTC Cup (1200m) before returning to the winner’s circle with a memorable effort in the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1350m) last time out.
Also returning to racing in great form this season, Temple Of Boom steadily built to the task over three starts in autumn before returning to Queensland for an impressive triumph in the Victory Stakes.
Running on for fourth in the BTC Cup and second to Spirit in the Doomben 10,000 last time out, the Piccolo gelding has arguably received the ideal lead-in to the 2014 Stradbroke Handicap and is more than capable of an upset victory.
Also included in the final field for the 2014 Stradbroke Handicap is Srikandi.
While yet to contest an event at Group 1 level, Srikandi has more than earned her place in the final field of the 2014 Stradbroke Handicap, carrying incredible form of five consecutive victories into this weekend’s feature.
Claiming a total of six victories and one second placing from her seven competitive starts, the Dubawi filly will only have to carry a race-low 51kgs, and will be more than a chance if allocated a favourable barrier.
Trainer Chris Waller is offered twice the chance of success in the 2014 Stradbroke Handicap, having accepted positions in the final field for leading contender Red Tracer and Velrosso, with third entry Masthead confirmed as first emergency.
A noted performer in events over the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival, Red Tracer strolled home to win the Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes (1400m) before breaking through for a maiden Group 1 victory in the Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) during the 2013 season.
Having returned to the track in typically strong form in 2014, the Dane Shadow mare won the Group 2 Millie Fox Stakes (1300m) with ease first-up and worked towards a fighting third in the Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m) last time out on April 19th.
Returning to her pet distance of 1400m this weekend, Waller is confident Red Tracer will figure in contention from any alley she may be allocated and is confident leading jockey Nash Rawiller will get the best from his leading entrant this weekend.
Claiming six wins and three minor places from 21 competitive appearances to date, Velrosso finished fifth in the Listed Star Stakes (1300m) last time out, and will likely require an ideal gate and quick tempo early to figure in contention in the 2014 Stradbroke Handicap.
A stand-out performer over early events in the 2014 Autumn Carnival, Hucklebuck is offered a great chance of success in the Stradbroke with just 51kgs on his back.
Claiming the Dominant Handicap (1200m) and Group 3 CS Hayes Stakes (1400m) with ease first-up this year, the Elvstroem gelding was struck down with respiratory issues during the running of the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) on March 1st, forcing an early end to what would have been a busy autumn preparation.
Returning for fourth in the Group 3 Fred Best Classic (1350m) last time out, trainer Phillip Stokes is confident Hucklebuck will display his best form at Eagle Farm this weekend.
Breaking through for a maiden Group 1 in The Goodwood (1200m) at Morphettville last time out, Smokin’ Joey has reportedly worked particularly well since arriving in Brisbane for the 2014 Stradbroke Handicap, and is a legitimate chance for success from any barrier this Saturday.
The barrier draw for the 2014 Stradbroke Handicap is scheduled for Wednesday morning at 10:30a.m EST.
