2014 Stradbroke Handicap Barrier Draw

June 4th, 2014

The Barrier Draw for this weekend’s Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) has been completed and is sure to blow betting markets for the feature event wide open; with the majority of leading contenders all allocated wide berths.

Claiming outright favouritism in betting markets since being confirmed to contest the 2014 Stradbroke Handicap, Srikandi’s chances of maiden Group 1 success have taken a noticeable blow in being allocated the awkward barrier 17.

Aiming for a sixth-consecutive race win when lining up for this weekend’s feature race, trainer Ciaron Maher revealed that while not ideal, he believes the Dubawi filly will still figure in contention in the Stradbroke Handicap.

“It’s probably a little wider than I had hoped for,” Maher said following the barrier draw.

“From there you think she’ll roll forward in some fashion. The leaders don’t have a great record in the race, so it will just depend on the speed and when the barriers open I’d like her to sort of sit in.”

Featured as outright second-favourite for success prior to the barrier draw, Rebel Dane has his work cut out for him in the 2014 Stradbroke Handicap, allocated the wide and awkward gate 22.

Returning to the track in positive form this season, Rebel Dane finished second to Lankan Rupee in the Group 1 T.J. Smith Stakes (1400m) first-up and fifth in the Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m) before finishing fourth in the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1350m) last time out.

Confirmed to be partnered by in-form hoop Tommy Berry, the California Dane entire is likely to require an ideal jump in order to figure in contention.

Charged with carrying a race-high 58.5kgs in the 2014 Stradbroke Handicap, in-form local Spirit Of Boom’s chances took a huge boost on Wednesday when allocated the ideal barrier 6.

Having returned to the track in career-best form this season, Spirit Of Boom has finished no-worse than second in six appearances, including impressive victories in both the Group 1 William Reed Stakes (1200m) and Doomben 10,000 last time out.

Trainer Tony Gollan was understandably pleased with barrier 6 for Spirit Of Boom’s tilt at the 2014 Stradbroke Handicap, and is confident in the Sequalo entire’s chances this weekend.

“He’s been settled really well for the last 12 months and the good alley is really important for Michael (Rodd, jockey), and with the big weight he just has to take his time and try and have the last shot at them,”

“You really only get a couple of chances in the year to get them out to this distance, and I won’t complain about the distance; I think he’ll run it out perfectly and he loves this track, loves Eagle Farm.”

Also confirmed to saddle in-form stable mate Temple Of Boom in the Stradbroke Handicap, Gollan said he does not think barrier 18 will cause too many headaches for the former Group 1 winner.

“I would have preferred a 1 or an 8, not 18, but a lot of the speed is drawn out there with him really, so I don’t think she’ll (jockey Tegan Harrison) will have to overthink it too much; she’ll roll out from a good start,” Gollan said.

“The way he’s been jumping and wanting to put himself into races I don’t think she’ll have to drive him – he’ll put himself up into the first four or five and maybe bossy (Glen Boss) on Srikandi can do a bit of donkey work for him.”

Claiming tied favouritism in betting markets for success in the 2014 Stradbroke Handicap following this morning’s barrier draw, Hucklebuck will leave from the ideal barrier 1, while emergency Scream Machine was allocated the wide barrier 23.
