2014 Stradbroke Handicap Nominations Down to 30

Nominations for the 2014 Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) have been trimmed down to a list of 30 potential acceptors ahead of Wednesday’s final field of 18 plus emergencies and barrier draw.

Maintain pre-post favouritism since Buffering was confirmed to return to the spelling paddock last weekend, Srikandi leads the list of 30 nominated for the 2014 Stradbroke Handicap.

Securing an incredible total of six wins and one second from just seven competitive race starts, Srikandi is unlucky not to be carrying a perfect career start into the 2014 Stradbroke Handicap, having been unlucky to finish second in the Drain Man Fillies (1000m) first-up on February 28th.

Continually building in class and form on her way to an impressive victory in the Group 3 Glenlogan Park Stakes (1350m) last time out, the Dubawi filly will have to find an extra gear if to continue her sensational run of form in her maiden tilt at the highest level of Australian racing this weekend.

Also included the in the list of 30 remaining nominations for the 2014 Stradbroke Handicap is talented Chris Waller-trained stable mates Red Tracer and Catkins.

A noted performer over the 2013 Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival, Red Tracer strolled home to win the Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes (1400m) before breaking through for a maiden Group 1 victory in the Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m).

Continuing to build in form and class throughout a memorable spring campaign that included an impressive win in the Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m), the Dane Shadow mare has been unlucky not to secure another Group 1 title in four starts this year, but did register strong runs for third in both the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes (1300m) and Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m) last time out.

Catkins is arguably the most talented Australian racecourse currently in work work yet to break through for a maiden Group 1 victory.

Claiming three victories from five starts this time in, the Dubawi mare has also been included in nominations for the Dane Ripper Stakes at Eagle Farm on Saturday, and is likely to accept a position in the final field for that event, according to Waller.

Also set to be offered twice the chance for success in the Stradbroke Handicap, Tony Gollan’s ‘Boom Brothers’ have made the cut into the nominations’ final 30.

Champion of the 2012 edition of the Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m), Temple Of Boom has continued to impress over three racing preparations, despite being yet to record another Group 1 victory.

Returning to racing in typically competitive form this season, the Piccolo gelding finishing mid-pack in three starts over autumn before returning to Brisbane with a strong win in the Group 2 Victory Stakes (1200m) on April 26th.

Finishing second to Spirit Of Boom in the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1350m) last time out, Gollan is confident his well-trialled seven-year-old will produce another impressive performance this weekend.

Returning to the track in undoubtedly career-best form this season, Spirit Of Boom has been a leading performer in 2014; finishing no-worse than second in over six starts which has also included tow Group 1 victories.

Finishing second to the world’s leading sprinter Lankan Rupee in both the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) and Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) first-up, the Sequalo entire broke through for a maiden Group 1 victory in the William Reid Stakes (1200m) on March 21st.

Returning to Queensland to finish second in the Victory Stakes and Group 1 BTC Cup (1200m), Spirit Of Boom jogged clear of the pack to comfortably continue his incredible run of form this season in the Doomben 10,000 last time out, and has received the ideal lead-in to this weekend’s feature.

Breaking through for a maiden Group 1 victory when flashing home down to outside to win The Goodwood (1400m) at Morphettville last time out, Smokin’ Joey is a great chance of success in the 2014 Stradbroke Handicap.

A standout performer over the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival, the Encosta De Lago gelding strolled home to win the Group 3 TAB.com.au Stakes (1400m) on November 2nd before nearly causing the season’s biggest upset when finishing a short nose behind Boban in the Group 1 Emirates Stakes (1600m) just one week later.
