Stradbroke Handicap Day is finally here and the big race at Eagle Farm today is of course the $1.36 million Group 1 AAMI Stradbroke Handicap (1400m), the latest betting odds for which are detailed below.
Running as Eagle Farm Race 8 at 3:40pm (AEST) the 2013 Stradbroke Handicap field is at capacity with the original 18 acceptors all set to line-up and the five emergencies now withdrawn from the field with their hopes of making the line-up in Queensland’s richest race now over.
In the current Stradbroke Handicap odds at bookmaker.com.au it is the Anthony Cummings-trained Your Song heading the markets at $4.80.
Winner of the BTC Cup by five lengths in the wet first-up this season, the Fastnet Rock colt was found out on firmer ground when a luckless sixth in the Doomben 10,000 behind a similar field last start.
They are tipped to bounce back today however with a better weight (54kg) and return to their blistering BTC Cup form.
Odds on most of their main dangers have eased out over the last few days especially those on Kelso Wood’s Queensland Guineas winner from last weekend Sizzling who is at $7.
Despite their awesome record at the track, last year’s TJ Smith winner is drifting in their quote to win successive Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival features just seven days apart.
They may have done it before but this is a top field and they have one of the widest barriers to overcome.
They do have the 52kg lightweight of the field however so wouldn’t rule them out totally.
Also losing favouritism is former top fancy Epaulette from the Sydney stables of Peter Snowden.
Big winner of the Doomben 10,000 last start Epaulette suffered a blow drawing the second widest barrier for today but are proven in top class so could still be in with a chance if they get into the right position and have the speed to finish off.
The other single figure fancies are then another local three-year-old in Better Than Ready ($8.50) who will relish dropping back to 52.5kg after their Doomben 10,000 fifth, and the Rob Heathcote-trained perennial Group 1 placegetter Buffering ($8) looking to snare that elusive major.
One of the real market movers for the Stradbroke Handicap today meanwhile is Spirit Of Boom well supported as a double figure chance on the move in from around $26 to $18.
Drawn in gate two and set to get a lovely run, Tony Gollan’s Queenslander has been very competitive this time in including their last start fourth from an awkward gate in the Doomben 10,000.
