2013 Stradbroke Handicap Winner Linton Denies Buffering

June 8th, 2013

In yet another close Group 1 finish for Rob Heathcote’s always honest Queensland galloper Buffering the five-year-old had to be happy playing the bridesmaid once again in the Stradbroke Handicap 2013 after being run down by the fast finishing grey Linton.

It was an absolute stellar effort to win this year’s $1.36 million Group 1 AAMI Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) by Galileo six-year-old Linton who worked their way from well back on the home turn at Eagle Farm to take out Queensland’s richest race.

Ridden patiently by Nick Hall Linton, coming off successive wins in Adelaide and an eye-catching trial at Flemington when second to Newmarket Handicap winner Shamexpress, had one of the widest barriers to overcome.

They didn’t look a chance at the top of the straight either sitting around 10 lengths off last year’s Stradbroke runner-up Buffering who had been taken to the front nearly straight away by jockey Damien Browne.

But after a big gap opened up on the inside Hall made their move and luckily he had a horse with enough guts, class and heart to get the job done with Linton flashing past them in to take out the classic.

On the line Linton ($26), who is likely to return for some of the middle distance spring majors after proving to be more of a 1400m – 2000m horse as opposed to a genuine stayer, had three quarters of a length to spare over Buffering ($6.50) while the Guy Walter-trained Streama ($11) was a brave third only a length off the winner.

Race favourite Your Song meanwhile was over five lengths away 14th in a race where most of the top fancies failed to really impress.
