Pear Tart Sale Opens Up 2013 Stradbroke Handicap Field

May 30th, 2013

The fight for a spot in the 2013 Stradbroke Handicap was made slightly easier after Pear Tart was sold to an international breeding partnership yesterday.

Pear Tart was assured of an entry into the race, however, will likely be retired and miss the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap altogether.

Winning bidder Adrian Nicol paid $675,000 for Pear Tart at yesterday’s sales and revealed his plans broodmare plans for the three-year-old.

“I’d say she will probably be retired and it’s highly unlikely she will race on,” Nicol said.

“She was bought as part of a partnership between the Niarchos family of France and Coolmore. The Niarchos’ owned her grandmother and are excited about breeding with her. She will probably go to Pierro.”

Belltone is one of the horses that is on the cusp of making the 2013 Stradbroke Handicap.

Trainer Kelso Wood decided not to attempt to gain automatic entry into the field with a QTC Cup win this Saturday and will instead sweat the final acceptances.

“I don’t need the stress,” admitted Wood.

“Hopefully he gets in because he’s beautifully weighted.”

Belltone has won nine of his 29 race starts and has earned more than $497,000 in prize money during his horse racing career.

His latest run resulted in a win in the Group 3 BRC Sprint at Doomben on May 18, 2013.
