New Zealander Durham Town will have his 2012 Stradbroke Handicap test when he runs in the Listed Prime Minister’s Cup at the Gold Coast tomorrow May 5, 2012.
The four-year-old gelding will line-up in the Prime Minister’s Cup for trainers Donna and Dean Logan after winning his most recent start in the Group 3 Darley Plate at Ellerslie in New Zealand on March 3, 2012.
Durham Town has won six of his 10 race starts and has earned more than $150,000 in prize money during his career.
Dean Logan feels that Durham Town is a special sprinter who deserved a chance to battle it out in some of Australia’s biggest features.
“We don’t normally bring sprinters over to this country. The Aussie sprinters are normally too sharp for our horses. That’s why we tend to bring over stayers,” Logan said.
“We’re using this race to see where he can fit in over here.
“We hope to find out whether he’s just a second-tier sprinter or whether he’s up to the big races like the Stradbroke.
“He’s been nominated for the Stradbroke just in case he measures up, that’s the main reason we’re testing the waters with him tomorrow.”
It will be the first time the Falkirk gelding will run over 1,300 metres tomorrow.
“He hasn’t been tested beyond 1200 metres but we’re confident he can go further,” Logan said.
“He’s got a good record but he should have finished in the first three in the Telegraph Handicap (when he lost his rider at the 400 metre mark).”
Logan sees Mid Summer Music as the main danger to Durham Town’s chances in the 2012 Prime Minister’s Cup.
“He’s been working well since he arrived and we’re as confident as we can be,” Logan said.
“I think the danger will come from Mid Summer Music.”
