Early Market Betting & Preview Of The 2010 Stradbroke Handicap

April 30th, 2010

As the days draw short, and winter rolls in, horse racing fans head to the Sunshine State and the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival.

Due to jump on the 12th of June, the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap will see another field of top quality Australian competitors, and currently has 138 nominated all looking to claim the $1 million prize money.

Ortensia is the early market favourite with odds of $5.50.

Held at the beautiful Eagle Farm Racecourse just outside of the city, the 2010 Stradbroke Handicap once again claims the title of Brisbane’s richest and most celebrated race, and spans 1,400 metres.

The huge entry list reads like a who’s-who of Australian thoroughbred’s, and looks set to provide a fantastic line up with one possibility being the filly Melito by Redoute’s Choice with early odds of $7.

Having finished second to Hot Danish recently in the Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m), Melito won the Group 1 T J Smith Stakes (1200m) prior to that in front of the six-year-old mare in an impressive race.

Hot Danish has been Melito’s biggest competition as of late, and the Les Bridge-trained mare has instead been nominated for the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1350) on the 29th of May, which Melito has also been nominated for.

Ortensia is the early market favourite with odds of $5.50. The Testa Rossa mare is coming into the race off the back of two impressive wins in the Group 2 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) and the more prestigious Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m).

Trained by Tony Noonan, Ortensia found her form last year at the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival so could be a lucrative early bet.

Whobegotyou, trained by Mark Kavanagh, rounds off the top three early market favourites with odds of $7.50.

The four-year-old mare has twice won a Group 1 event, although has not raced since her sixth place finish in the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) last October.

Other races taking place at the Eagle Farm Racecourse on the 12th of June will be the Group 1 T J Smith (1600m), the Group 1 Queensland Derby (2400m), the Group 2 Brisbane Cup (2400m) and the Group 2 Queensland Guineas (1600m).
